3. Champions League exposure

An interesting aspect of the deal that, unfortunately, Arsenal themselves cannot offer. Tavares’ temporary stay on the French coast will expose him to the elite level of European competition as a second-place finish last term will see Marseille return to the Champions League.

Experience on the biggest stages has formed an important cog in the Gunners’ transfer dealings this summer, with Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko both appearing in the 2021 Champions League final and Fabio Vieira arriving from Porto last month as a Primeira Liga champion. Meanwhile, a lack of know-how in challenging circumstances was considered to be partially responsible for our collapse last season as a young squad capitulated under pressure and let fourth spot slip from their grasp.

The memory of that disappointment will in itself serve the team well in preparation for the new campaign, but exposure to adversity remains the most effective means of boosting resilience. And although Marseille are not expected to compete for the European crown, Tavares will still get his first taste of football on the continent’s top table which will hopefully expedite his individual growth.
