Arsenal Transfers – Fulham reach agreement with Gunners for Leno

Arsenal has agreed to a deal that will send goalkeeper Bernd Leno to Fulham in an £8 million deal.

German shot-stopper Bernd Leno is edging closer to a move to Fulham after Arsenal and the newly promoted side agreed on an £8 million deal, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Personal terms have also reportedly been agreed upon as clubs work through the finer details of the move. A medical has reportedly been scheduled for next week as well.

Leno’s time with the Gunners was always going to be running out when Aaron Ramsdale was signed from Sheffield United last summer.

After seeing his game time drop dramatically as Ramsdale quickly became Mikel Arteta’s number one keeper, the writing was on the wall for the 30-year-old.

Signed for £22.5 million back in 2018, Leno quickly made his name as a great shot stopper and was a feature of the Gunners’ backline.

However poor performances and a want for Mikel Arteta for his keepers to be good with the ball at their feet, Ramsdale was signed, effectively signaling the end of Leno’s Arsenal career.

Given his limited amount of game time and the fact that the World Cup is this year, a move to a club where he would be guaranteed minutes was paramount for the 30-year-old. It is expected he will be the undisputed number one at Craven Cottage.

With the German now moving on, Arsenal has added £ 8 million to its transfer budget and a nice chunk of salary off its books.

With Matt Turner signed from the New England Revolution, there was simply no reason to keep Leno. He wanted first-team minutes, something he would not get at Arsenal, and after the clubs played hardball over the transfer fee, it finally looks like the German will get his move out of north London.

Leno was the ultimate professional during his time with the club and never rocked the boat. His professional attitude endeared him to the Gunners faithful, and he leaves the club winning the FA Cup.
