It finally seems as if the complicated, drawn-out saga surrounding William Saliba is coming to a satisfying end. Following loan after loan, the Frenchman has joined the squad and what an influence he has already had.

Some of his influence has naturally come on the pitch. Whether he’s heading balls away using his intimidating stature, nipping in for an interception or sprinting to cover the wide channels; he is always in control of the situation. Typically, the offensive player always has the upper hand in one-vs-one situations with the defender constantly in a state of reaction. With Saliba, though, the upper hand belongs to the defender. He has the power and presence to force his opponent to succumb to his will.

Against Chelsea in Florida Cup, he marshalled the defence well. Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, while not perhaps world-class, do boast pace and dribbling ability. Against the latter, there was one phase where Saliba was one on one. The centre-back jockeyed for position, forcing Werner wide before closing the distance at the right time to block a low-percentage shot.

The other part of his influence comes off the pitch. With his ability to play at a Premier League level, Ben White can cover for Takehiro Tomiyasu. This is revolutionary as it allows Arsenal to play in their desired structure with the right back tucking into midfield. Although White may not be as comfortable as Tomiyasu, the technical security and defensive nous across the backline remain dependable, unlike when Cedric suits up.

Saliba is ready to announce himself to the Premier League and the world. It’s time for people to sit up and take notes.
