Aaron Ramsdale has revealed the lengths he went to on social media to keep his mind focused after making the switch to Arsenal.

Last summer, Mikel Arteta sanctioned a move for then Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The Englishman had suffered relegation with the Blades, and many were unsure of just how the keeper could push Bernd Leno out as the Gunners’ number one.

What made things even worse for the 24-year-old was the price tag that accompanied him. Arsenal splashed £25m on the Ramsdale, with many fans on social media condemning the club’s signing of the goalkeeper.

Such was the backlash that the 24-year-old decided to limit features on his social media. The keeper spoke about the difficulties he faced at the beginning, but it was better for him and his family that he made the change.

"“At the very start, it was difficult,” Ramsdale said via Goal.com.“I had a lot of negativity around the signing, with idiots online saying ‘Don’t sign!’“Not necessarily death threats but threats saying ‘We know where you live and things like that, trying to scare me. Quite quickly I turned all that stuff off. Social media for me is a place to communicate with my friends and with the fans as well, but with limits on who can actually reach me.“So, I just turned comments off from people I don’t follow and turned notifications off on Twitter from people I don’t follow. They can still try to message me but I will never see it.”"

Probably the best thing is that it did not take long for the goalkeeper to silence any doubters out there. He instantly made himself a household name with some seriously impressive performances.

One simply can’t forget his save from a James Maddison free-kick away at Leicester as he was at full stretch and tipped the ball onto the crossbar before making another save to deny the home side.

It was those kinds of heroics combined with his easy-going nature that quickly endeared him to the Gunners faithful.

We have seen just how bad social media can be towards players after a poor performance or even, like Ramsdale, signing for a new club, but the 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength since joining the Gunners and has left all those naysayers with nothing to talk about.
