A message of goodbye for the long-serving Hector Bellerin
By Kenneth Daly
The times they are a-changin’. He first joined as a La Masia prodigy 11 years ago and witnessed remarkable change to his north London abode in the years that followed, but it appears the end of an era is now in sight as Arsenal and Hector Bellerin finally prepare to go their separate ways.
Although any official contract termination is still a work in progress, Bellerin has held a tenuous association with the Gunners for some time and last donned the famous red and white at Stamford Bridge in May 2021, with the Spanish international spending the entirety of last season on loan at La Liga outfit Real Betis.
Conversely, his Arsenal journey ignited very quickly and he made his competitive debut for the club in a 2013 League Cup clash away to West Brom, just months after signing his first professional deal. However, it was a defensive injury crisis the next season that granted Bellerin the opportunity to establish himself in the side and he took it with both hands, completing the campaign with 28 appearances as he secured his status as Arsene Wenger’s first-choice right-back.
A message of goodbye for Hector Bellerin as his lengthy stay at Arsenal comes to an end
Perhaps the greatest shame is that, despite his early promise and incredible acceleration, interminable injury problems always curtailed his development. Years of regular ankle and muscle issues restricted his minutes on the pitch and such medical troubles came to a head in 2018/19 when, just days after recovering from a four-week calf-strain layoff, Bellerin ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and was ruled out of action for the rest of the season.
While his efforts on the pitch sometimes left much to be desired, the former vice-captain still produced several magical moments in Arsenal colours – including the exquisite half-volley to snatch a point late on against Chelsea and his outstanding determination to deny Bafetimbi Gomis at the Liberty Stadium – and he will be remembered with respect as he embarks on a new adventure.
His strong commitment to environmental causes and a keen interest in the world of fashion mean his influence will be felt far beyond sporting circles, but 239 games and over a decade of service ensure he will always have a place in Arsenal hearts. Adiós Bellerin, and good luck in your future endeavours.
