Jose Francisco Mamede, Jesus’ former coach, once tipped the then-teenage Brazilian to be crowned the best player in the world.

“In three years he’ll win the Ballon d’Or, because [Lionel] Messi will already be getting a bit old,” he said back in 2016. Mamede’s projection proved to be far-fetched despite his contribution to Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City side.

Jesus was never the star at the Etihad, but he’s been thrust into a leading role at Arsenal and the early signs suggest that he’s embraced the increased responsibility. The Brazilian is expected to be the protagonist for Arteta’s side this season, with FPL owners backing the 25-year-old to enjoy a career year in 2022/23.

The bullish forward certainly has the talent, and should he top score for the Gunners this season amid a successful campaign, we could see him make next year’s shortlist. His form in north London should also convince Tite to utilise him as a starter in Qatar over Tottenham’s Richarlison, who won’t be earning regular starts ahead of the tournament.

It’s about time Jesus cemented himself as a star on the international stage.
