Arsenal are off to a great start, but let’s cool the jets on title talk
By Adam Schultz
Arsenal have won their opening three games for the first time in 18 years and a hint of title talk is starting to surround the north London club.
Three wins out of three and a +7 goal difference is some start to the season for Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal side. It starkly contrasts the opening to 2021/22 when the Gunners, ravaged by COVID and injuries, lost their opening three games, didn’t score in any of them, and conceded nine.
The opponents are at the opposite end of the scale as well. Having faced Brentford, Chelsea, and Manchester City last year, Arsenal have taken care of Crystal Palace, Leicester, and Bournemouth to sit atop of the Premier League table.
Many have pointed to the Gunners’ soft schedule to open up the campaign as the catalyst to its early season form, but they have been so dominant that they could easily take on every side in the league and more than hold their own.
Arsenal are off to a great start, but cool the jets on title talk
It is a small sample size, yes, but what we are seeing from Arteta’s Arsenal is becoming a common theme. The genius mind of Jamie O’Hara compared us to Manchester City on Saturday evening, and it is hard to argue.
The high-intensity pressing, the movement from the entire front three, and the stout defence that has kept two clean sheets in the opening three games.
As much as it would be superb to think that this Arsenal side can challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the title, it is probably a bit premature at this stage.
Banking points early in the season is crucial and it gives the side some wiggle room towards the back end of the campaign in case the team hits the skids. Teams can’t keep up their form for the 38-game league season, so having those points in the bank is vital.
Even the most hardened Arsenal fan will be struggling to contain the excitement and joy that the first three games of the season have brought, but it is also essential to keep things in perspective. It is only three games.
While much of the title talk is ironic, there are some who genuinely believe that Teta’s young Gunners can go all the way this season. We have looked utterly sensational in periods to start the campaign, but we should cool the jets on any title discussion as we know how quickly football can change and how fickle it can be.
The season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the Gunners, and with a soft-ish schedule for the next couple of weeks, Arsenal could really start the 2022/23 season with a bang.
Just hold the title talk.
