3 standout players from Arsenal’s comeback win over Fulham
By Krish Ajmani
1. Martin Odegaard
How Arsenal were able to convince Real Madrid to let Odegaard go for a measly £35m is a mystery that no one will be able to solve. Yet Arsenal supporters will not mind a great deal given his showing on Saturday.
Odegaard was under the magnifying glass as his first two games this season did not set the world alight. Against Fulham, however, he was nothing short of spectacular. His passing in the build-up phases and his speed of thought were instrumental in moving around the Cottagers’ deep block. His incisive passes did not yield any assists but after going behind, he almost singlehandedly willed the team back into the game.
Leading from the front, the Norwegian pressed with an infectious intensity. This is not a game they were going to lose. Odegaard also caught criticism for perhaps being a little slow to pull the trigger and get a shot off. Arsenal’s first goal shows his growth in this department and despite a fortuitous deflection, the goal was all down to Odegaard’s persistence.
Several of his incisive passes were unlucky to not become assists but the attacking midfielder will be happy with the win. A true captain indeed.
The match against Fulham was anything but plain sailing. It served as a reminder that every game in the Premier League poses its own challenges and Arsenal will have to do more than play beautiful football to win. They will have to scrap and claw their way to hard-fought victories. On Saturday, they did just that.
