Emile Smith Rowe picked up an injury when warming down at OId Trafford after Arsenal had been beaten 3-1 by Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils were devastating in transition against an impressive Gunners as Marcus Rashford scored twice for the hosts to sink the previously perfect visitors. Bukayo Saka had drawn Arsenal level on the hour after Antony had given United the lead before Rashford then Christian Eriksen exploited a high defensive line to take the contest away from Mikel Arteta’s side.

It was a triple substitution from the Arsenal boss that hamstrung the away side after falling behind 2-1. Their structure was a mess and they were quickly made to pay when Eriksen waltzed in behind and squared for Rashford to tap home.

Smith Rowe was one of Arteta’s first three substitutes as he made his fourth appearance off the bench this season. As he was warming down after the game, though, he appeared to have picked up another injury.

It’s customary for all bench players to cool down on the pitch after the game and Sunday was no different. Smith Rowe joined the likes of Fabio Vieira, Eddie Nketiah and Takehiro Tomiyasu for a warm-down at Old Trafford, but the England international was forced to withdraw with an apparent injury.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that Smith Rowe “looked distressed” as he returned to the dressing room with an undisclosed issue.

The versatile playmaker is yet to make a start for the Gunners this season as he missed the vast majority of pre-season due to injury. Arsenal’s excellent start to the campaign means Mikel Arteta has found it hard to rotate his starting XI with both Gabriel Martinelli and Granit Xhaka – the two players currently performing potential Smith Rowe roles – particularly impressing.

Supporters will hope that his withdrawal from Sunday’s cool-down is a mere precaution. Another injury setback would be detrimental for Smith Rowe, who was hoping to build on an excellent 2021/22 campaign.
