The Premier League have decided to postpone this weekend’s fixtures as a mark of respect for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Thus, Arsenal’s clash with Everton on Sunday is OFF.

Her Majesty died at the age of 96 on Thursday following 70 years on the throne. It’s a seismic event that’s been broadcasted all over the world. She ruled for longer than any British monarch in history, overseeing the appointments of 15 different Prime Ministers, all while serving as a figurehead through the most brilliant and toughest of times, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

The vast majority of sporting events were cancelled on Friday as a result of her death, but the UK government decided that the decision to postpone this weekend’s football would be left with the governing bodies.

However, soon after the government’s decision was revealed, the Premier League released a statement which confirmed that this weekend’s fixtures will not go ahead as planned.

“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the statement opened.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.”

Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, added: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.”

The Premier League’s statement then concluded: “This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.

“Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.”

Sports fixtures will also be postponed on the day of the Queen’s funeral, which is set to take place next weekend.

For Arsenal, their upcoming contest at home to Everton will be rescheduled, while their trip to Brentford next weekend is also at risk of postponement. Thus, with an international break on the horizon, the Gunners’ next Premier League clash could be against Tottenham in the North London Derby at the start of October.
