Another week, another Thomas Partey injury concern. Pulling out of Ghana’s friendly against Nicaragua, Partey has returned to London for a scan on his knee. There is hope that this early trip back is merely precautionary, especially since he was in line to play on Tuesday. Arteta has certainly been putting pressure on international FAs, with his eye on the North London Derby. Should Partey be given the green light for Saturday, he will be essential to Arsenal getting the win.

While Albert Sambi Lokonga is no slouch, against Brentford, Partey showed why he is the starter. He provides a certain level of calm both on and off the ball. When in possession, his passing gets countless plaudits, yet equally important is his press resistance. Wriggling through challenges and gliding between opposition players foolish enough to press him gives Arsenal an outlet. When the direct passes into Martin Odegaard or Gabriel Jesus aren’t on, the Ghanaian can push through the middle of the pitch.

The former Atletico Madrid man is comfortable when forced to defend as well. His reading of the game and ability to sense danger before it becomes apparent is crucial. His experience and nous will be needed against a Tottenham attack that has proven to be effective this season. Partey’s height is an underrated feature of his game and will be useful in both attacking and defending set pieces. In a game as big as the one coming up, every marginal advantage matters. Let’s hope Partey is fit and firing come Saturday.
