3 standout players in Arsenal’s North London derby triumph

2. Thomas Partey
Facing a late fitness test coming into the game, fans waited with bated breath to see the lineup. In the last big game against Manchester United, Arsenal’s high line was ripped open, partly due to Albert Sambi Lokonga’s inexperience (from which he will learn and undoubtedly become a wonderful player). Supporters were relieved on Saturday when Thomas Partey’s name was featured and then ecstatic after watching a world-class performance from a world-class player.
While the goal was top drawer, so was Partey’s all-around play. He has perfected arguably the most difficult role in football: that of the lone six. In charge of breaking up play, driving forward with the ball and also sliding progressive passes into front players, the Ghanaian proved to be the impetus Arsenal needed to control the game. Attacking players can push forward with the added security of Partey behind them while defensive players can give him the ball knowing he will make the correct decision when in possession.
Partey plays with the energy and intensity of a box-to-box midfielder but with the nous of a pure defensive lynchpin. This unique mix of qualities makes it hard to replace him, despite the concerns around his injury record. He will continue to miss games, so fans should enjoy every second of the Ghanaian while he’s donning red and white.
