Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool: 4 talking points as Gunners show title credentials
By Adam Schultz
Arsenal highlighted their title credentials with a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon as they returned to the top of the Premier League table.
As expected, Mikel Arteta named a strong starting XI. Still, with one big surprise, Takehiro Tomiyasu was named at left-back with Kieran Tierney on the bench and Oleksandr Zinchenko missing out altogether.
It took less than a minute for Arsenal to open the scoring. Martin Odegaard laid off a superb pass to find Gabriel Martinelli, who coolly slotted home to get the Gunners off to an incredible start. Darwin Nunez then brought his side level after a great pass from Luis Diaz, with the Uruguayan being on hand to tap home.
Arsenal took the lead back just seconds before half-time. A blistering counter-attack led to Martinelli driving into the Liverpool box, with the Brazilian picking out Bukayo Saka at the back post to tap home.
Liverpool brought themselves level for the second time just seven minutes into the second half, however. A great pass from Diogo Jota found Roberto Firmino, who hit his shot across Aaron Ramsdale and into the net.
Arsenal were dominant after the restart, though, and their superiority was rewarded via Saka converting from the spot after Thiago kicked Gabriel Jesus while trying to clear the ball. The Gunners’ third lead was one they wouldn’t relinquish as they moved back to the top of the league table and 14 points clear of Liverpool.

It was a superb performance that saw Arsenal take the lead twice before being reeled in, but thankfully, it was third time lucky as they now move 14 points clear of the Reds.
