Sporting/technical directors are the rage right now, and Arsenal have a pretty good one in Edu Gaspar. Thus, it’s no surprise that several European clubs are interested in acquiring the Brazilian.

The former Gunner returned to north London in 2019 and became the club’s first-ever technical director after previously working with the Brazilian national team. Following a tricky start, Edu has helped stabilise the Gunners with his savvy work in the transfer market bringing about a distinct improvement on the pitch.

Edu was a major advocate of Mikel Arteta’s appointment as manager in late 2019, and the pair have worked in tandem to build an Arsenal squad that’s capable of competing at the very top of the Premier League.

The 44-year-old backed Arteta’s project to boom in 2022/23 and the Gunners have got off to a brilliant start; sitting atop the Premier League table through ten games.

It took some time for Edu to convince supporters, but Arsenal’s work in the past two summer transfer windows has certainly quashed any doubts over the Brazilian’s competence.

Edu’s savviness in the transfer market certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. Unfortunately, though, he’s garnered interest from elsewhere.

According to Fabrizio Romano, “more than two” European clubs have expressed an interest in potentially acquiring the 44-year-old. Romano adds that Edu is a name that has been “discussed internally” by the unnamed clubs, but notes that the Arsenal director is “100% focused” on his project in north London.

He’ll be keen to negotiate the long-term contract extensions of William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli in the coming weeks.

For now, Gooners should breathe easy, but this situation could develop in 2023. It’s no surprise that Edu has garnered interest considering how desperate many clubs are to bring in someone of the Brazilian’s standing in a directorial role.
