Arsenal secured progression into the Europa League knockout stages by beating PSV Eindhoven 1-0 at the Emirates on Thursday evening.

The hosts controlled the first half without testing PSV keeper Walter Benitez, but that would change after the restart as Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka forced the Argentine into two good saves.

Arsenal imposed their will on the visitors, who rarely threatened, in the second half and took a deserved lead through a well-taken Granit Xhaka strike. The Gunners continued to dominate and if it wasn’t for Benitez their lead would’ve been far greater.

The introduction of Noni Madueke gave PSV some impetus in the final quarter of proceedings, but they failed to make Matt Turner work between the sticks as the Gunners claimed all three points to qualify for the KOs.

Matt Turner (GK) – 6/10 – Had very little to do regarding shot-stopping and distribution.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (RB) – 7/10 – Marshalled Cody Gakpo pretty well and was assured in possession throughout. Grabbed the assist for Xhaka’s opener.

Rob Holding (CB) – 7.5/10 – Holding didn’t give PSV forward Guus Til a sniff. This was a commanding display from the Arsenal defender, especially in the air.

Gabriel (CB) – 6.5/10 – A quiet defensive outing for the Brazilian, who missed a couple of opportunities from set pieces in the first half.

Kieran Tierney (LB) – 7/10 – Tierney was the standout performer in the first half. The Scot was excellent on the overlap. Influence waned in the second period.
