Southampton 1-1 Arsenal: Player ratings as Gunners held by Saints
Arsenal dropped points for just the second time this season as they were held 1-1 by Southampton on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners started the contest superbly and their superiority was rewarded with yet another goal from Granit Xhaka. Thursday’s match-winner expertly drilled home Ben White’s cross to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Southampton slowly grew into the contest but Arsenal dealt well with a set-piece barrage before finishing the first-half on the front foot once more.
Gabriel Jesus spurned a glorious chance to double his side’s advantage after the restart before the Saints drew level through Stuart Armstrong.
The visitors came again after Mikel Arteta turned to his bench, but fatigue eventually prevailed as Arsenal endured a sloppy end to the contest. In the end, the points were shared at St. Mary’s.
Southampton 1-1 Arsenal player ratings
Here are the Arsenal player ratings from their draw at Southampton.
Goalkeeper & Defenders
Aaron Ramsdale (GK) – 6/10 – Can hardly blame him for Armstrong’s goal in what was an otherwise quiet outing for the Arsenal man.
Ben White (RB) – 7.5/10 – Are you watching, Gareth Southgate? White produced a fantastic first-half performance which saw him record an assist. His cross for Xhaka was on the money. Life was made difficult for the right-back after half-time and he was eventually substitued.
William Saliba (CB) – 5.5/10 – Again, this wasn’t the most convincing of Saliba performances. A sloppy error gifted Adam Armstrong a promising opening at the start of the second half, and the Saints had more joy attacking his side compared to Gabriel’s.
Gabriel (CB) – 8/10 – A monster effort from the Brazilian. Giorgio Chiellini would’ve been proud of his box defending today.
Takehiro Tomiyasu (LB) – 6/10 – Got dragged infield once or twice which opened up plenty of space down the flank for the Saints, but he was otherwise stout. Switched over to right-back to end the bout.
