Arsenal produced their worst performance of the season on Thursday evening as they were beaten 2-0 by PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

The Gunners looked off from the outset and struggled to create anything of any substance in the first-half outside of Gabriel Martinelli’s volley. PSV, meanwhile, failed to time the final pass as they had two goals ruled out for offside.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s decision to bring on Luuk de Jong at half-time was an astute one as he provided the hosts with a much-needed focal point. De Jong’s impact was immediate as he teed  Joey Veerman for the opener before doubling PSV’s lead with a simple header.

Mikel Arteta turned to his big guns off the bench in a bid to turn the tide, but they were unable to breach the PSV defence as the hosts claimed a 2-0 victory to keep their hopes of topping Group A alive.

Goalkeeper & Defenders

Aaron Ramsdale (GK) – 4/10 – While Veerman’s opener was expertly taken, Ramsdale was directly responsible for the Gunners falling two goals behind as he allowed De Jong to head home into an empty net.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (RB) – 5.5/10 – Did a pretty good job of shacking Cody Gakpo in the opening period, but the PSV skipper had plenty of joy getting behind Tomiyasu after the restart.

William Saliba (CB) – 4.5/10 – Saliba’s form has certainly taken a dive over the past couple of weeks. The Frenchman was almost caught dallying in possession by the excellent Xavi Simons in the first half, and he currently doesn’t look like the defender that impressed almost everybody at the start of the season.

Rob Holding (CB) – 4/10 – Fresh off a fine performance last Thursday, Holding dropped a dud in Eindhoven. He did not fancy the battle with De Jong at all.

Kieran Tierney (LB) – 5.5/10 – Performed a versatile role in the build-up, but that was the only notable aspect of Tierney’s quiet display.
