Arsenal slumped to their second defeat of the season in all competitions at the hands of PSV Eindhoven on Thursday evening. Two second-half goals from Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong gave the home side a deserved win.

Mikel Arteta named a strong starting XI as the chance to win the group with a game to spare was a nice carrot for his team.

The first half never lived up to any hype, with the first 40 minutes producing little from both teams. The home side had two goals disallowed for offside, with Cody Gakpo first and then Xavi Simons coming close to opening the scoring.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, PSV got their goal as substitute De Jong played a neat ball to Veerman, who coolly slotted home past Aaron Ramsdale.

PSV doubled their lead just seven minutes later. Ramsdale came to punch a corner but missed the ball, and De Jong headed home to double his side’s advantage. It was a bad performance as we’ve seen from Arteta’s side, as they never really got close to PSV at the Philips Stadion.

It serves as a wake-up call for the Gunners, and attention now turns to FC Zurich next week as they look to top Group A.
