Arsenal announced on Friday morning that Edu Gaspar has been named as the club’s first-ever Sporting Director.

The Brazilian had previously been labelled as the Gunners’ Technical Director which saw him play a prominent role in Mikel Arteta’s rebuild in north London.

Edu’s work in the transfer market has been commended over the past couple of years, and this move should be regarded as a hugely positive one for the club.

Announcing the move, the club said: “We are delighted to announce that Edu Gaspar has been appointed as Arsenal’s first-ever Sporting Director.”

Now, you might be wondering what the difference is between a technical and a sporting director. Thankfully, Arsenal clarified what Edu’s promotion entails: “Edu’s promotion sees him assume over-arching responsibility for all our Academy activities, in addition to his existing responsibilities across men’s and women’s football.”

The Brazilian hasn’t exactly taken on a completely different role, but this position should see Edu gain even greater power within the Arsenal hierarchy. Thus, it’s a wise move from the club with European clubs believed to be interested in acquiring the former Invincible.

Speaking about his promotion, Edu said: “I’m delighted to have this new role which I see as an evolution and consolidation of the way we’ve been working. We are making good progress in all areas of our men’s, women’s and academy and we are all excited about what can be achieved.

“I look forward to building on the hard work of so many people and helping all of us grow together and enjoy more success, and am thankful for the trust the club has put in me. We move forward together.”

Arsenal will now look to tie their new Sporting Director down to a new contract.

Nevertheless, Friday’s news is another example of Arsenal acting like the big club that they are. This a great move.
