Arsenal sweating over extent of Gabriel Jesus’ knee injury
Gabriel Jesus has been ruled out of the 2022 World Cup with a knee injury, but the Brazilian could be out for up to three months should he require surgery.
Jesus has proved to be a revelatory piece of business from Arsenal after he joined from Manchester City in the summer. He started all 14 of Arsenal’s Premier League games before the break but had endured a lengthy goal drought after starting the season in fine goalscoring form.
Nevertheless, his impact on Mikel Arteta’s side has been profound, but Arsenal are staring down the barrel of potentially being without their talisman for a prolonged period.
Arsenal sweating over extent of Gabriel Jesus’ injury
After it was revealed that Jesus would miss the rest of the World Cup with a knee injury, Sportv reported that the striker will undergo surgery and thus be out of action for three months.
However, fellow Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte (via @afcstuff) wrote on Sunday that Jesus’ injury will be assessed by Arsenal before a decision is made over surgery. For the time being, he’s going to remain around the Brazil squad in Doha before flying back to London.
They add that the former Man City forward was playing through pain in his right knee during Arsenal’s final few matches before the World Cup before jetting off to Qatar with the national team. Jesus made substitute appearances in Brazil’s opening two games and earned an unfruitful start against Cameroon to round off the group stage.
The Brazilian’s decision to ignore the pain and continue to play could prove to be a detrimental one in Arsenal’s 2022/23 season. He’ll miss a significant amount of the second half of the season should surgery be required, with Eddie Nketiah poised to deputise up top.
It could be a career-defining period for Eddie, who ended last season brightly but has struggled at the start of 2022/23. The English striker signed a big contract earlier this year and has taken, arguably, the most iconic shirt number at the club. Now it’s time for him to prove his worth.
