Arsenal open up 2023 at the Emirates on Tuesday night as they play host to an excellent Newcastle side that hasn’t tasted defeat in the Premier League since the end of August.

Life is sweet right now for Gooners. Not only are the Gunners top of the Premier League by a healthy margin, but their fiercest rivals, Tottenham, are slowly entering crisis mode with Antonio Conte at the helm.

Mikel Arteta’s side picked up yet another victory to close out 2022, but they were made to work for their 4-2 triumph at Brighton. Defensive errors rendered the contest rather chaotic by the closing stages, but Arsenal’s victory was never really in doubt.

However, a big test awaits in the form of Eddie Howe’s Magpies, who were finally slowed down at the weekend as Leeds held them to a stalemate at St. James’ Park. Nevertheless, the Tynesiders have been in scintillating form either side of the World Cup and currently boast the best defensive record in the division.

It’s poised to be a belter!

Arsenal Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Arteta, who could name an unchanged side from the New Year’s Eve victory over Brighton.

Emile Smith Rowe is also edging closer to making his return, and he could be in Tuesday’s matchday squad.

Newcastle Team News

Callum Wilson should lead the Newcastle line after making a substitute appearance last time out, while Allan Saint-Maximin is slowly working his way to full fitness. The Frenchman could make Howe’s starting XI on Tuesday with Joelinton potentially dropping into midfield.

The Magpies will be without Jonjo Shelvey, who has been ruled out for several weeks with a calf injury. Alexander Isak is also absent, but he’s relatively close to making his return from a lengthy injury layoff.

Prediction

This is poised to be an enthralling battle between the Premier League’s two most in-form outfits. Arsenal have the advantage of playing in front of a raucous Emirates on Tuesday, but Newcastle have proven to be stoic in the face of adversity during their impressive unbeaten run.

The Gunners are full of confidence and they purred in attack at the weekend, but the Magpies are an excellently-coached unit and are remarkably stout in defence. They’ve conceded just 11 times this season. Although, it’s worth noting that their xGA (expected goals against) is 14.69 suggesting some defensive fortune.

Nevertheless, the visitors will undoubtedly make life difficult for the hosts and you could argue that this is the Gunners’ most challenging fixture since the home clash against Liverpool. Newcastle are a proper pesky side to play against and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them earn a point in north London.

Prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Newcastle
