Arsenal’s Premier League charge will take a brief pause this weekend as they’re in FA Cup action away at Oxford United on Monday night.

The dark arts of Eddie Howe’s robust Newcastle frustrated the Gunners last time out as they were held on home soil. Their lead at the top was subsequently cut down to five points after Manchester City squeaked past Chelsea on Thursday night.

A couple of mammoth Premier League fixtures await Mikel Arteta’s side in the coming weeks, but first, they must manage this potential banana skin. Third-tier Oxford United will be hoping to cause a huge upset when they face Arsenal for just the tenth time ever.

The Gunners have struggled in this competition since they lifted the trophy under Arteta’s tutelage in 2020 and were eliminated at this stage by inferior opposition last season. As they did at the City Ground in 2022, the visitors will be donning an all-white strip as part of the club’s ‘No More Red’ campaign in support against knife crime and youth violence.

Let’s hope for a more positive outcome this time around!

Oxford Utd Team News

The hosts do not have any injury concerns heading into Monday night’s game and will field a full-strength starting XI.

Former Liverpool youngster Cameron Brannagan will be the one to watch out for, along with striker Matty Taylor.

Arsenal Team News

Arteta will heavily rotate his side for Monday night’s clash and we should see something akin to Arsenal’s starting XI throughout the Europa League group stage.

Thus, the likes of Matt Turner, Rob Holding, Mohamed Elneny, Fabio Vieira, and Marquinhos all are poised to earn rare starts.

Emile Smith Rowe could make his long-awaited return to competitive action, with some reports even suggesting he’ll start this FA Cup tie.

Oxford Utd’s Recent Form

Oxford Utd 0-1 Exeter (01/01) – League One

Oxford Utd 3-1 Charlton (29/12) – League One

Ipswich Town 0-3 Oxford Utd (26/12) – League One

Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Oxford Utd (17/12) – League One

Accrington Stanley 1-1 Oxford Utd (03/12) – League One

Arsenal’s Recent Form

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle (03/01) – Premier League

Brighton 2-4 Arsenal (31/12) – Premier League

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham (26/12) – Premier League

Arsenal 0-2 Juventus (17/12) – Friendly

Arsenal 2-1 AC Milan (13/12) – Dubai Super Cup

Prediction

A heavily rotated Arsenal XI will be expected to win comfortably at League One opposition, but I think this contest might be a little tricky for the visitors.

The magic of the FA Cup may be dwindling, but there’s still room for a major upset and while I don’t think the hosts will have enough to pull off the unlikely, I’m expecting them to make life difficult against an Arsenal XI that flattered to deceive at times during the Europa League group stage.

The Kassam Stadium will be rocking under the lights and the hosts will be desperate to write their name into the history books. However, I’m backing the Gunners to just about sneak through with the returning Smith Rowe to make the difference late on.

Prediction: Oxford Utd 1-2 Arsenal
