Arsenal make the short trip across north London this weekend as they take on Tottenham in a hugely significant derby.

The Gunners claimed victory in the first NLD of the season back at the start of October and have continued to develop under the savvy tutelage of Mikel Arteta. They’re currently five points clear at the top of the Premier League and 11 clear of their most bitter rivals.

A 4-0 victory at Crystal Palace was huge for Antonio Conte after his side were beaten at home by Aston Villa to begin 2023. Frustrations are growing down the road over Daniel Levy’s stinginess in the transfer market, and the atmosphere will certainly turn toxic if things don’t go Spurs’ way this weekend.

For the first time since Arsene Wenger left town, Arsenal look comfortably superior to their north London rivals, but they’re yet to taste victory in Spurs’ swanky new stadium and have generally struggled in this fixture over the past decade.

Tottenham Team News

Dejan Kulusevski has been out of action since New Year’s Day with a muscle problem, but he did return to training ahead of the derby and he’s set to make Conte’s matchday squad. However, the Italian could retain Bryan Gil in his starting XI.

Rodrigo Bentancur is unlikely to start, but Yves Bissouma will return to the fold after pulling up in the warm-up of Spurs’ FA Cup victory over Portsmouth. The former Brighton midfielder should partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.

A hamstring injury has ruled Richarlison out of the derby.

Arsenal Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for the visitors despite Bukayo Saka’s minor knock. Emile Smith Rowe made his long-awaited return to action at Oxford on Monday night, and he’ll occupy Mikel Arteta’s bench on Sunday.

With Gabriel Jesus still sidelined, Arteta will probably name an unchanged XI from the stalemate against Newcastle.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Predicted Lineups

Tottenham: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet; Doherty, Bissouma, Hojbjerg, Perisic; Gil, Kane, Son.

Arsenal: Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.

Arsenal’s Recent Form

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle (03/01) – Premier League

Brighton 2-4 Arsenal (31/12) – Premier League

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham (26/12) – Premier League

Arsenal 0-2 Juventus (17/12) – Friendly

Prediction

I don’t think there’s any questioning who’s the superior side, but winning away at Spurs is no easy feat. The Gunners haven’t claimed victory in this fixture in eight years – nine in the Premier League.

This contest usually entertains the masses, and I don’t think Sunday will be any different. We could be in for a bit of a goal fest. The visitors must take advantage of a vulnerable Spurs backline – albeit one that has kept back-to-back clean sheets – because Harry Kane is destined to get himself on the scoresheet once again. The England striker is in imperious form, but so is Eddie Nketiah.

The first goal will be key in determining the game state and the overall victor, but I’m going to play it safe and back a draw.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-2 Arsenal
