While many supporters were expecting the announcement of Leandro Trossard’s £27m arrival from Brighton on Friday morning, they were instead treated to the news of another impending addition.

Versatile Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior is set to join the club in a £17.5m deal that should be wrapped up this weekend.

It’s a shock move that’s caught absolutely everybody off guard, but Kiwior is poised to become a Gooner nonetheless.

Gunners closing in on another January signing

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Kiwior will join Arsenal in a €25m deal from Spezia and is flying to north London to complete his transfer over the weekend. The 22-year-old is highly regarded in Italy after arriving from Slovakian side Zilina in 2021.

Kiwior has gone on to play 37 times for Spezia in Serie A, and has earned nine caps for Poland off the back of his impressive club form. The defender was also a part of Poland’s 2022 World Cup squad as he made four appearances in Qatar.

He’s a player that very few fans will know anything about, but his price tag for a player of his profile would suggest that there’s plenty of potential for Mikel Arteta to work with. The left-footed defender will function as Gabriel’s second in command, but his versatility means he could also provide cover for Thomas Partey if required.

Kiwior is a depth signing that should aid Arsenal’s Premier League title charge. With the Europa League returning in February, Arteta needs more players to rely upon to ensure the Gunners can compete on multiple fronts without compromising their title bid.

The 22-year-old will likely become Arsenal’s second signing of the January transfer window after Trossard, who is poised to join the club in time for Sunday’s league game against Man Utd at the Emirates.
