Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table with a dramatic late turnaround at Villa Park.

After falling behind early on courtesy of an Ollie Watkins goal, Bukayo Saka equalised for the Gunners. The hosts then took the lead again through Phillipe Coutinho, but Oleksandr Zinchenko’s first Arsenal goal pegged them back level once more.

Two stoppage-time goals, one an own goal from Emi Martinez and one from substitute Gabriel Martinelli, gave Arsenal the win against a resilient side led by former Gunners boss Unai Emery.

Arsenal’s first victory in four Premier League matches brought them three points clear of Manchester City in second, who drew to Nottingham Forest to close the gap to two.

Standout player #1 – Jorginho

Once again, Jorginho has proved his doubters wrong. His display against Man City was good, and today he built upon it. The Italian gave Arsenal the calmness that was needed in the second half after a poor first half.

He was a key reason Arsenal were able to put pressure on Villa for so long. He may not be as fancy and athletic as Thomas Partey, who missed the match due to a muscular injury, but he offers experience in these moments.

The 31-year-old’s stoppage-time effort effectively gave Arsenal the win. Jorginho was found unmarked on the edge of Villa’s box, where he cannoned the ball off of the bar onto Martinez’s head and into the goal.

Speaking after the match, Jorginho said: “We had a chat at half-time and went back to the basics. We changed the game. That’s why the Premier League is the best in the world.

“It’s just beautiful, and important after the last results we have had.”
