Arsenal have performed far better than expected this season, challenging Manchester City for the title. Part of their success has been down to the dependability of selection. The starting lineup has largely remained the same, allowing Mikel Arteta to pick the same team week in and week out.

However, with the Europa League soon to start again and Arsenal stumbling in the past couple of weeks, some players may be needed sooner rather than later.

The bench looks stronger than it has in some time, but players still need to work up fitness and form before they are suddenly needed.

1. Kieran Tierney

Oleksandr Zinchenko has transformed Arsenal since his arrival. His ability on the ball, intelligence when coming into midfield and leadership have been nothing short of incredible. His success has, however, come at the expense of Kieran Tierney’s playing time.

The Scottish player had his time in the limelight in the past and fans have quickly forgotten his quality. His bombarding runs, quality deliveries and growing comfort playing infield may be needed sooner rather than later.

Despite all of Zinchenko’s strengths, the left-hand side has looked stagnant in recent games. The left winger holds the width but this places them further from goal. They cannot come inside as Zinchenko and Granit Xhaka occupy that same space. This leaves the winger isolated and often ineffective. Tierney’s ability to stretch the pitch by staying out wide when playing up the field would allow attacking players to move closer to goal.

Some control may be lost in midfield but it would add unpredictability to Arsenal’s play in the final third. Such variance is crucial as teams have started to adapt to Arteta’s tactics. While Tierney will certainly get minutes in the Europa League games, more game time in the Premier League should be prioritised as well. An in-form Tierney competing with Zinchenko is an excellent problem to have.
