3 standout players from away win against Leicester
By Krish Ajmani
Arsenal looked to restore their momentum against Leicester City on Saturday. A tough win away from home resulted in the London outfit taking home all three points. In the first half, all of the signs pointed to a Jamie Vardy winner off the bench to make it 1-0.
The players were slow in their passing, with the Foxes content to sit deep and make Arsenal break them down. The opposition looked to counter-attack quickly, using the pace of Kelechi Iheancho to target the channels. These efforts were ultimately wasted both because of assured, proactive defending and indecision from Leicester’s attackers.
The second half saw Arsenal storm out of the blocks. Gabriel Martinelli made the most of this momentum, scoring what would be the winner soon after the break. The players had to dig deep with Leicester posing a greater threat towards the end of the game. While Mikel Arteta will certainly not be happy with the loss of control, he will be elated with the points.
3 standout players from away win against Leicester
Several players in particular were key to securing a tough away win against Leicester. Here are three that stood out on the day.
3. Leandro Trossard
What an impact Leandro Trossard has made in the team. Since his move to Arsenal, the Belgian has shown his quality when starting and off the bench. His dribbling, close control and finishing have been apparent whenever he steps onto the pitch. Fans saw a new attacking configuration featuring the recent transfer on Saturday.
Arteta restored Martinelli to the left-hand side while deploying Trossard through the middle. How much of this is due to Eddie Nketiah’s fatigue and how much is because of Trossard’s quality remains up to debate. Yet it is clear that Trossard is a genuine option at striker. His style against Leicester was similar to Jesus’. He dropped deep, looking to receive the ball before turning and attacking while also playing off the shoulder of the last defender.
Although his goal was cruelly chalked off in the first half, we again saw his finishing on display. He also impacted the game after the break. Instead of dropping deep, he burst into the left channel, driving at an exposed Leicester defence before playing in Martinelli for the winner.
While any striker will have difficulty finding and attacking space against a low block, Trossard played well. His movement and ability to drift around the attacking third means he will continue to push for a starting spot. If he continues to play as he did against Leicester, he just might get it.
