The long-awaited game in hand takes place on Wednesday as Arsenal attempt to avenge their defeat at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche’s Everton are back in town just weeks after they beat the Gunners 1-0 on Merseyside to temporarily thwart their title charge. Dyche’s gameplan stumped Mikel Arteta’s side on that occasion, and the Spaniard will be desperate to ensure he doesn’t oversee a repeat at the Emirates.

The Gunners have rattled off back-to-back wins to stabilise their title bid and victory over the Toffees will see them extend their lead at the summit to five points over Man City.

It’s been a mixed bag for Dyche since his debut win over Arsenal. Everton have won one and lost two since that victory and remain amid a relegation dogfight. The visitors will be determined to scrap away for at least a point on Wednesday, but they’ve only won away at Arsenal once since the Emirates opened.

Thomas Partey returned off the bench at the King Power and Arteta will want to deploy the Ghanaian from the outset on Wednesday given Everton’s physicality in midfield. Jorginho has barely put a foot wrong in his absence, but the Italian’s set to drop to the bench for this one.

Leandro Trossard worked well in a central position at the weekend, and Arteta could retain this dynamic in his frontline with Eddie Nketiah remaining on the bench.

Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira are pushing for minutes, but the boss isn’t likely to make many changes from Saturday’s XI.

Everton team news

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was excellent in the reverse fixture, but he’s unlikely to be fit to play on Wednesday after sustaining a thigh injury. In his absence, Dyche could stick with Neal Maupay but the Frenchman was poor against Villa on Saturday. Ellis Simms and Demarai Gray are alternate options.

Andros Townsend, Nathan Patterson, and Joel Garner remain out for the away side.

Prediction

Calvert-Lewin is going to play a major role in Everton’s survival bid under Dyche and his absence is a blow. Without him, the Toffees will struggle to get up the pitch on Wednesday and are likely to succumb to sustained Arsenal pressure.

The Gunners performed well in the first and second phases at the weekend, but they’re not quite clicking in the final third. They’ve got to be efficient in a contest like this.

The hosts mustn’t surrender needless set pieces because it’s hard to envisage the visitors doing much damage from open play. Dyche will not make life easy for the league leaders, but Arsenal should prevail in a tight and edgy affair.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Everton
