There is no question that Arsenal’s defence has been extremely solid this season. The backline has done the dirty work well while also contributing further up the pitch. One continued selection headache, however, is the right-back position.

Ben White began the season as Arsenal’s starting right-back due to Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury. He has performed admirably in a fairly new position. He has been largely solid defensively while adding to his game in the final third. Tomiyasu’s quality can’t be overlooked, though – hence the headache.

He was the standout player for much of last season; adding height, athleticism and defensive nous to the backline. When fit, he was a guaranteed starter. This season has seen him largely confined to the bench. This is due to White’s form as opposed to any issues with Tomiyasu. Yet the latter may have to come in against Everton.

The team looked uncomfortable defending set pieces in the reverse fixture, with their only goal coming from a corner. Tomiyasu’s added height and aerial ability should help mitigate their threat inside our box while his pace and defensive acumen will mitigate their threat outside our box. Everton can break quickly and any fatigue or incorrect positioning could be punished.

Bringing in a fresh Tomiyasu and giving White a break could help get Arsenal over the line in a must-win game.

Arsenal have the chance to keep their momentum going against Everton. They can also redeem themselves from their loss a few weeks ago. The psychological boost of beating the Toffees could be huge moving into the tail end of the season. Additionally, with Europa League knockout games on the horizon, getting minutes into the legs of players expected to start in those games would help massively. Arteta must take advantage of his larger squad to keep his team at the top of the league.
