Thomas Partey’s most recent injury had not been felt as keenly as it had in past seasons. The astute January signing of Jorginho has let fans rest fairly easily. Against Bournemouth, Partey showed exactly why he starts when fit.

As the lone holding midfielder, he was tasked with covering exceptional amounts of ground. The Ghanaian’s athleticism in midfield was crucial in shutting down Bournemouth’s counter-attacks and covering the channels as they looked to play long. His long strides also allow him to close the gaps to opposition midfielders and wingers, tracking them and forcing them to slow play, allowing Arsenal to get men behind the ball.

Added responsibility in possession was also placed on him. After winning the ball, the defence turned to him, trusting him to quickly move the ball to the attackers. Partey passed efficiently, spreading play to wide players or breaking the lines to Martin Odegaard and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Not to mention his apparent nose for goal (perhaps he should start up front while Gabriel Jesus is injured).

While the signing from Chelsea has proven to be a useful addition to the squad, covering such large distances with such efficiency is something only Partey can do for now. He was essential to getting the three points on Saturday.
