Great news for American Gooners. Arsenal and MLS have announced that Arsenal will be the opponent for the MLS All-Star game in July in Washington DC.

A familiar foe in Wayne Rooney will be on the touchline for the All-Stars when the Gunners come to the United States capital, which should make for an exciting opposition.

Arsenal heads to the US to play in the MLS All-Star game

This is enormous news again for American fans as it’s the second time in as many years that Arsenal will be stateside. It has proven to be a great way for American fans to connect with the team further and see Arsenal play live, something that is pretty tough to do when there’s an ocean standing in your commute to the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking about his side’s summer tour, manager Mikel Arteta said: “It’s great that we’re playing against the MLS All-Stars in Washington D.C. in July. Our US tour last summer was very good preparation for the season, and we’re looking forward to once again visiting our amazing supporters in the US. The match against the MLS All-Stars will be a good test ahead of the 2023/24 season.”

The Gunners last played the MLS All-Stars in 2016 in San Jose, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Joel Campbell and Chuba Akpom with the latter winning the game’s MVP award. The goal from the MLS came from a name that Arsenal fans would recognise, as old foe Didier Drogba levelled the score before Akpom won the match in the 87th minute.

It’ll also likely be a second appearance in the MLS All-Star game for Arsenal’s Matt Turner, who represented the MLS in the 2021 match against the Liga MX All-Stars.

American Gooners thoroughly enjoyed having the team in the US last summer, with the three matches against Everton, Orlando City, and Chelsea having excellent fan support. The MLS All-Star game should be no different. It would not be too surprising if many of the fans in attendance root for the visitors, with fans taking advantage of watching their team play live – many of which for the first time.
