While much attention has been drawn by the attacking players this season (and rightfully so), Thomas Partey’s performances have largely gone under the radar. This oversight is unforgivable, especially given the midfielder’s consistency and form. One only has to look at the games where he has been injured or rotated.

When Partey is out, the midfield looks slow, ponderous and heavy-footed. Jorginho, despite his important qualities, cannot even compare to what the Ghanaian provides. A blend of athleticism and grace on the ball, combined with experience off of it, allows Partey to dominate entire midfields by himself. He provides the base for the attacking players to flourish.

He is progressive in his passing, breaking the lines at every opportunity. His technical quality allows other players to trust him. They know his quality.

Recent pictures have shown Arsenal’s physiotherapist accompanying the midfielder to Ghana. His fitness is always a concern, especially given his injury record. The lack of like-for-like alternatives makes his inclusion all the more necessary. If, however, his minutes can be managed intelligently, keeping him fresh, he could push Arsenal to their first title in 20 years.
