Mikel Arteta was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award for March 2023 – his fourth such award of the season.

The Spaniard guided his team to an impressive four wins out of four during the month, which saw Arsenal head into the international break with a commanding eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, albeit with Manchester City boasting a game in hand.

His fourth award of the season means he is nearing Jurgen Klopp’s record for the most Manager of the Month awards, but exactly how close is he?

Mikel Arteta closes in on landmark Premier League record

Jurgen Klopp’s current record

The German holds the current record, with the Liverpool manager winning the award on five separate occasions during the 2019/20 campaign. In doing so, the 55-year-old surpassed Pep Guardiola’s previous record of four, a feat the Manchester City manager accomplished in the 2017/18 Premier League season.

Arteta a potential record breaker

With Arteta currently sat on four, and still two more awards up for grabs this season, he is exceptionally well-placed to equal the record at the very least. But, if the Spaniard was able to win both the remaining awards left to play for, a scenario which is plausible if he successfully guides Arsenal to the Premier League title, then a new record would be set.

A difficult April

However, in order for him to do that, he must first win the award for April, and based on the Gunners’ upcoming fixtures, that will not be easy. In the next month, Arsenal will face Liverpool away, Manchester City away and London rivals Chelsea at home in a month that could potentially decide the Premier League title race.

If Arteta can navigate those fixtures successfully, not only will his side be within touching distance of the title, but he will be on the verge of making history on a personal level too.
