Arsenal reportedly hold a ‘specific interest’ in Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, but they’ll have to fight off several Premier League clubs if they’re to sign the World Cup winner this summer.

Mac Allister’s stock increased exponentially over the winter as he played a crucial role in Argentina’s rise to World Cup glory. He joined Brighton midway through the 2019/20 campaign from Boca Juniors and has since made 87 Premier League appearances for the club.

His integration into Graham Potter’s set-up took a little while before he started to earn a more prominent role last season. The 24-year-old has evolved from a nimble playmaker into a dogged box-to-box performer, with his showing at the World Cup depicting his capacity to compete at the elite level.

Brighton smartly tied Mac Allister down to a long-term deal before he departed for Qatar, and the Seagulls will not allow the Argentine to depart for anything below their valuation this summer.

Arsenal have ‘specific interest’ in Premier League midfielder

Arsenal could be in the market for two midfielders this summer. Further depth is required behind Thomas Partey at the base of midfield, while the club may acquire an upgrade on Granit Xhaka despite the Swiss international’s stellar season.

Mac Allister would be a great fit for Xhaka’s left-sided #8 role in Mikel Arteta’s 3-2-5 possession structure. Thus, the Gunners’ reported interest in the 24-year-old does make sense.

According to Cesar Luis Merlo, Arsenal are one of several Premier League clubs keen on signing Mac Allister this summer. Liverpool and Man Utd are also said to be keeping tabs. Two of these clubs have supposedly already made contact with Brighton over a potential deal.

Acquiring the World Cup winner will cost Arsenal a pretty penny if they were to make a move, but Mac Allister is the sort of purchase the club has to make if they’re to further evolve under Arteta. Should they enter negotiations with Brighton over the 24-year-old’s signature, they’d be wise to try their luck with Moises Caicedo once again following their failed January pursuit.

There’s your #6 and #8 for the next however many years.
