Arsenal wouldn’t be where they are in the Premier League table with nine games to go if they hadn’t overcome a challenge or two this season.

The Gunners have surprised almost everybody and mounted a serious title charge well ahead of schedule in Mikel Arteta’s project. Optimism was rife within the fanbase heading into the season, but what supporters have enjoyed in 2022/23 has been way beyond their wildest expectations.

An eight-point buffer has opened up between themselves and their closest rivals Man City. However, the Citizens have played a game less and history, combined with the Citizens’ current form, suggests Pep Guardiola’s side may well keep on winning until the campaign draws to a close.

One defeat for Arteta’s side (excluding the trip to the Etihad) and the title could be in City’s hands. The margins are fine, and the north London side have a massive task this weekend when they take on Liverpool on Super Sunday. The Reds are as vulnerable as they’ve ever been under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage, but they’ll be visiting a ground where they haven’t won in over a decade.

When was the last time Arsenal won at Anfield?

Arsenal actually claimed victory at Anfield in a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie in 2020, but that triumph came on penalties after a 0-0 stalemate. Their last proper victory came over a decade ago at the start of the 2012/13 season on 2 September.

Summer signings Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski propelled Arsene Wenger’s Gunners to victory as they both got on the scoresheet in a 2-0 victory to secure Arsenal’s first win of the campaign.

This was the contest that many Gooners remember for Abou Diaby’s staller performance as he dominated a Liverpool midfield still containing Steven Gerrard. A 17-year-old Raheem Sterling also started the game for the pitiful Reds and was the hosts’ brightest performer.

Arsenal’s comfortable triumph was their second on the spin at Anfield as they continued their then-impressive record against Liverpool. The Reds had won just one of their previous 11 meetings with the Gunners after this defeat and that run would extend to 13 games before they claimed an emphatic 5-1 victory at Anfield in February 2014 amid their title charge under Brendan Rodgers.

Arteta joined the imperious Diaby in Arsenal’s midfield, with the likes of Vito Mannone and Carl Jenkinson making Wenger’s XI.
