As Arsenal prepare for a trip to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, many believe this is the Gunners’ best chance of winning on the red side of the Mersey since they last claimed victory on Liverpool’s home patch in September 2012.

Mikel Arteta’s side are locked in a thrilling title duel with Man City, and while their current buffer at the top is eight points, one defeat before their trip to the Etihad and the title could be in City’s hands.

Jurgen Klopp’s side remain incredibly tough to beat on home soil, but their miserable 2022/23 campaign suggests there are plenty of weaknesses the Gunners can exploit in their upcoming duel.

An obvious frailty that Arsenal have taken advantage of in previous encounters.

Although Alexander-Arnold’s backline shortcomings are well established, brilliant positional structure and terrific wide players mean the Gunners are perhaps better placed than most sides to benefit from them.

The guile and trickery of Gabriel Martinelli on either foot, in itself, presents a major problem for the fullback as he lacks natural defensive instincts and will struggle to contain the Brazilian in isolated situations.

However, Alexander-Arnold must also be careful to assess the advanced positioning and overlaps of our midfielders when we venture forward as they might tempt him into central areas, and any indecision about who to mark here will leave big spaces for the Arsenal attack.

It is a route that brought great joy in the reverse fixture, and there is little evidence to suggest the Liverpool man will fare better on this occasion.
