Manchester City’s title to lose? Why Arsenal still lead the title Race
By Adam Schultz
Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Liverpool, with many now stating the Premier League title is in Manchester City’s hands… but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The Gunners saw a two-goal lead slip against Liverpool on Sunday and their lead at the summit of the Premier League cut. Suddenly, Pep Guardiola’s side are the favourites to claim their third-straight league title.
The general argument is that City has to win all nine games, and the title will be theirs. Simple right? That is what most outlets are fixating on.
But there’s something they are missing…
What if Arsenal win all their remaining games too?
Manchester City’s title to lose? Why Arsenal still lead the title Race
While the stalemate at Anfield wasn’t ideal, the Gunners still picked up a point. The lead over City is now six points with a game in hand, which hardly makes it “City’s title to lose”, as some have suggested.
Arsenal do have the trickier finish to the season, no doubt, but they will be favourites going into every game they play (barring the City clash). Every win that is banked for Arsenal gets them one step closer to the title.
We also have to keep in mind that City HAVE to win every game. There is no margin for error for Pep Guardiola’s side. Coupled with the Champions League games midweek, City could have one eye on each competition, having not won the Champions League before. Which would they prefer?
That is the last jewel in Guardiola’s City crown, and it could be the reason Arsenal win the title.
The pressure on City to win every game is familiar to them, but having to battle hard on two separate fronts at the end of the season could be taxing.
Given the nature of the Premier League, no game is considered “easy,” and City can’t afford any slip-ups.
But for Arsenal, the path to the title is more straightforward. With West Ham and Southampton to come before the City clash, the Gunners should win both. They just have to keep winning.
Looking at City, Leicester City is up next. Then they have the return leg against Bayern Munich and then the FA Cup Semi-Final against Sheffield United. Each game will need a strong starting side to ensure the winning continues…and that is where Arsenal’s advantage lies.
So, for all the “advantage City” talk currently dominating the landscape, keep in mind that it is all predicated on City winning EVERY game from now until the end of the season and Arsenal dropping points.
Arsenal has yet to give us any reason not to think they can match City stride for stride until the end of the season, and they don’t have cup competitions to play in either.
City’s title to win? Not so fast.
