3 takeaways from Arsenal’s disappointing draw to West Ham
3. West Ham took the game to Arsenal
Although Arsenal were rightly the favourites to win this fixture, West Ham’s performance must be highlighted.
When the Hammers went down 2-0 in the first ten minutes, I think most fans of both teams and neutrals all around the world expected three points to head to north London. But, as we know, relegation-fighting teams rarely give up easily. Although the penalty decision was harsh if you’re an Arsenal fan, with Declan Rice potentially making contact on the ball with his hand, and Lucas Paqueta falling to the ground slightly before the contact, the east London outfit put on an impressively resilient performance.
Bowen, in particular, had an excellent game. The English winger was constantly worrying Tierney and often beat Arsenal to the 50-50 balls. His effort was rewarded with a skilful finish which levelled the score. Antonio almost won West Ham the game with a header that grazed the frame of the goal but was battled well by Gabriel. David Moyes and his squad will be delighted with the result.
Arsenal are still in the driving seat although their seatbelts are feeling rather loose. Manchester City’s next game is at the Etihad where they will host the league leaders in what can only be described as Arsenal’s biggest game in years.
