The strength and character Martin Odegaard has should be studied by psychologists. From languishing on loan spells to leading this Arsenal team admirably as captain, Odegaard has come a long way. His qualities were on full display against Southampton.

Although he gave the ball away for the second goal, when Arsenal pushed he was the one taking responsibility. His pressing never ceased. Constantly demanding the ball and working tirelessly to make something happen, he moved intelligently to receive before moving it quickly. He would even sprint over and stop within five yards of the player with the ball just to get touches. Odegaard inspired urgency when behind and belief when they equalised.

His brilliant strike from outside of the box was hit with such venom, the frustration could be felt even through the television screen. Here was a man that could not, would not let his team be embarrassed at home. The Norwegian did whatever he could to help the team, including firing in a long-range effort to get them back in the game.

Anyone who has doubted Odegaard’s leadership should rewatch this game. It tells you everything you need to know about who he is.

Arsenal faltered for the third week in a row against Southampton. The defending was particularly horrendous, with the pressure building and the backline looking more disorganised than they have all season. A few players impressed on the day but more will need to be up to par during the trip to the Etihad.
