Arsenal ran out 3-1 winners against Chelsea, but many fans were disappointed that the team didn’t go for the jugular and put five or six past them, even if it brought the team back to winning ways as required.

There were good performances all over the park from Arsenal, with pretty much every player having standout moments, but one who really excelled and went under the radar was Jorginho.

The Arsenal player that went under the radar in Chelsea win

The Italian midfielder got the nod over Thomas Partey, whose level has dropped since the international break, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Going into the game, there were calls for Arteta to utilise him more. After all, he signed him for his experience. He wasn’t bought for the long term, but for a five-month period to help us kick on and compete for the title, and when he has been used, he has performed.

In Jorginho’s five starts, Arsenal have won four, with the defeat coming against Man City at the Emirates Stadium; a game he was thrust into after Partey picked up an injury on the day of.

Despite his late inclusion, he performed well and has continued to deliver when called upon. Last night was arguably his best performance in an Arsenal shirt, as he provided a calm, composed head in the middle of the park after three weeks of instability.

While he offered the stability Arsenal had lost, it is worth pointing to the inclusion of Jakob Kiwior, who enabled the team to play with a much higher line, which reduced the distances between Jorginho, the centre-backs, the full-backs and eights.

This was part of Partey’s downfall, as he was having to play as an auxiliary centre-back, however, some of his decision-making was also extremely questionable and Arteta was right to drop him.

Jorginho utilized the tools at his disposal and linked well with Zinchenko, White, Xhaka and Odegaard, and look at ease popping the ball around the middle, and continuously recycling play.

In total, he finished the game with 76 touches, completing 62/69 passes, which highlighted his willingness to play one-touch football as the first option. That was crucial to Arsenal’s build-up in the first half as they pinned Chelsea back and moved the ball quickly.

He also won three of five ground duels and made a vital block. When Chelsea broke from an Arsenal corner, he used his vast experience to cut the passing lines for Kante and forced him to carry the ball longer than he would have wanted, and then play a difficult pass that was cut out.

This was a performance that will go under the radar because these are the things that don’t get the headlines, and when your midfield partners get two goals and two assists, you’re going to be even more overlooked.

But, that was a mature, tactically brilliant performance from a man who coaches throughout every minute of the game, and he is exactly the kind of level head Chelsea could use to sort out the mess they are in.
