The best Egyptian in the Premier League has finally returned to training. Mohamed Elneny has been sidelined for months. In this span, he has signed a new one-year contract with the club. Like some other members of the squad, his character cannot be questioned. He has been a loyal servant to the club and has been nothing short of a prime example of what is expected of Arsenal players. Hard work and dedication are synonymous with Elneny.

The Egyptian international’s limitations are clear. He is 30 years old, approaching the latter years of his career. A lack of risk-taking in his passing limit his utility. He also is not a particularly good ball carrier, lacking the technique and grace to glide up the pitch.

With Arsenal’s recent years in the Europa League, he has been a crucial member of the secondary contingent. He plays alongside the youngsters in awkward midweek games. This sacrifice cannot be overlooked.

Midfield will certainly be an area of overhaul in the near future. The likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo add quality and dynamism that Elneny simply cannot compete with. His contractual situation will also Arsenal to recoup more money than if he had not signed a new extension. His presence off the field will certainly be missed but his minutes on it are coming to an end.
