2. Ainsley Maitland-Niles

This season has seen remarkable changes in the way Arsenal play. Arteta continues to evolve tactically and it has shown on the pitch. Oleksandr Zinchenko slots into midfield, Ben White both overlaps and underlaps and other players rotate in a free but structured manner. While the positions of the players may change, the physical profile remains fairly constant. White and Takehiro Tomiyasu played at right-back this season. Both provide technical security, height and, perhaps most importantly, defensive solidity in that position. Ainsley Maitland-Niles simply does not fit the profile.

Questions have been posed about his technical quality. His mindset also remains dubious and his defensive nous is almost completely absent. With Arteta rumoured to be looking at potential incomings to further bolster the right-back position, it is clear that Maitland-Niles’ time at the club is coming to an end. He will always be remembered as a Hale End boy and was instrumental in Arsenal’s FA Cup win a few years ago, but it is time to move on.
