After an impressive debut season in the Netherlands, PSV star Xavi Simons has been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer. The Dutchman registered 19 goals and eight assists in the Eredivisie this season and has attracted interest from numerous big clubs.

The Barcelona graduate has four years on his current contract at the Philips Stadion after joining the side from PSG last year. The deal saw Simons leave for free, but PSG inserted a clause allowing them to resign the player from the Dutch club for €12 million (£10.3 million), which is subject to the player’s desires.

However, PSG has shown very few signs of attempting to re-buy Simons from PSV, and here are four reasons why Arsenal is front runner:

1. Xavi Simons’ agent and his significant name

Less than a month ago, the midfielder changed his representative from Rafaela Pimenta to a familiar face in Darren Dein. The son of former co-owner and vice-chairman of Arsenal, David Dein, will have connections and relationships inside the club that could help the deal go over the line.

The youngster’s former ‘super-agent’ inherited some of the world’s best players, including Erling Haaland and Matthijs de Ligt, after Mino Raiola’s death, but as former PSV manager, Aad de Mos, pointed out, “His change of agent indicates that he is looking (for a new club)” (Daily Mail).

Simons joined a clientele base of former Arsenal players, including Cesc Fàbregas, Alex Song, Gaël Clichy, as well as Denis Bergkamp’s son, Mitchel Bergkamp. The switch could suggest that the wonder kid has his eyes set on North London.
