Persistent positive updates sparked optimism among the fanbase regarding the club’s pursuit of Declan Rice, but concerning developments have been reported on Thursday.

Arsenal’s interest in the West Ham skipper became clear earlier this year and it was reported towards the end of the season that he was the Gunners’ priority transfer target for the summer. Several clubs have registered an interest in the England international, including Bayern Munich, but the Bavarian behemoths have since pulled out of the race with the German media believing Rice was destined for Arsenal.

Bayern’s submission combined with all the talk coming out of Rice’s camp regarding the player’s admiration for Mikel Arteta’s project led many to believe it was only a matter of time until the midfielder was a Gooner.

However, after being forced to wait to send their opening proposal to West Ham due to their European exploits, the Gunners’ have faced a setback in their pursuit.

West Ham reject Arsenal’s Declan Rice bid; Man City stepping up interest

Various reports confirmed on Thursday that Arsenal’s opening bid of £80m plus add-ons has been rebuffed by the Hammers. With West Ham seeking in excess of £100m for their captain, who still has two years left on his deal, it’s no surprise that the Gunners’ proposal was quickly rejected.

A fresh proposal is expected in the coming days, but what’s emerged as a more pressing concern for supporters is Man City’s increased productivity surrounding Rice. While Fabrizio Romano believes Arsenal remain the favourites for the midfielder’s signature, David Ornstein writes that City are now “actively exploring” a move for the 24-year-old.

Other sources suggest West Ham are interested to hear how much City are willing to pay for Rice, with some understanding the Citizens could blow Arsenal out of the water if they were to seriously pursue Rice.

With Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan both potentially departing for nothing this summer, City may require midfield reinforcements and there’s no doubt that Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Rice.

So, for Arsenal, a once hugely promising situation is edging towards danger. A bidding war is not what the club wants, but Edu & Co must move swiftly if they’re to avoid the wrath of the Sky Blues.
