Arsenal won their last pre-season game on penalties 5-4 against AS Monaco. The scores were level after 90 minutes as Youssouf Fofana and Eddie Nketiah netted in the first half. and the Gunners were 100% from their spot kicks to win the shootout.

Youssouf Fofana gave the visitors the lead with a superb header after some great work from Camara who got around Gabriel Martinelli.

The game never really hit any real heights until just before the break. A Martinelli corner was whipped in and Eddie Nketiah was on hand to volley home to bring the Gunners level.

Once again this pre-season, defensively Arsenal were easily got at as Monaco sliced through numerous times but Aaron Ramsdale was on hand to keep them at bay.

While yes it’s pre-season and some players are still getting up to speed, the ease with which teams have scored against Arsenal has been alarming, in particular Monaco.

The French side got through the Gunners at will and had the final ball or finishing been better, more goals would have followed.

Given how stout the defence was last season, the drop-off this pre-season has to be a little bit concerning for Mikel Arteta.

But, it is preseason, so we can’t exactly draw too many conclusions, but defensively, Arsenal don’t seem to be the unit they were last season.

Watch this space.
