Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya after reaching an agreement with the stubborn Bees.

Brentford have prepared for their goalkeeper’s exit this summer and were quick to sign a replacement in Mark Flekken at the start of the window. However, they were determined to acquire £40m for the Spaniard’s services which deterred the likes of Man Utd and Tottenham.

Arsenal weren’t expected to be in the market for a keeper this summer given Aaron Ramsdale’s impressive form since he joined the club, but the Gunners are prepared to splash some cash to give their current number one serious competition between the sticks.

Convinced by a move to north London, there were never going to be any issues on the personal terms front. However, Brentford have been dogged regarding their valuation of Raya all summer and it was no surprise Arsenal’s opening bid – believed to be in the region of £20m – was quickly shunned.

Now, though, Fabrizio Romano reports that a compromise has been reached and the Gunners have struck a deal with Brentford worth close to £30m. The transfer guru also notes that Raya ‘only wanted’ Arsenal despite interest from Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old will undergo a medical at London Colney later this week, and hopefully be unveiled before Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Speaking of whom, Ramsdale’s current deputy, Matt Turner, looks set to join Forest ahead of the new season. The American shot-stopper, who didn’t appear in the Premier League during his debut season at the club, completed his medical on Monday and is poised to depart for a £7m fee.

Raya will fill in as Ramsdale’s deputy right away, although his quality means he won’t want to serve as a mere backup. The Spaniard was one of the Premier League’s best-performing goalkeepers last season and he undoubtedly has the capacity to usurp Rambo between the sticks.

The Englishman, though, responded well to the proposed increased competition by making a couple of huge saves late on in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Man City. Let the duel commence!
