A Man of the Match performance from Declan Rice was epitomised by the late winner he scored from a Bukayo Saka corner in the 96th minute. Gabriel Jesus starred as well when he sent Diogo Dalot to the floor with nothing more than finesse and skill before slotting away a 111th-minute dagger to crush the dreams of Red Devil players, staff and supporters.

However, three players outside these headliners must start against Everton after the September international break.

1. Gabriel

Although the centre-back role has become slightly more glamorous in recent years, with more teams relying on ball-playing defenders to build the attack and control games, the forward positions are usually the most discussed.

Gabriel may have produced one of the most intelligent defensive sequences in recent Premier League history when he jumped up and ensured Alejandro Garnacho was offside before he scored what he thought was a dramatic late winner.

It was a brilliant high-IQ play that sought widespread praise post-match. Much has been made of the Brazillian international being left out of the starting lineup in the first games of the season, and based on his showing against United alone, the outrage was justified.

He offers a solidity not replicated anywhere else in the squad, especially when paired with the Rolls Royce Frenchman.
