Arsenal will take on West Ham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after they edged past Brentford 1-0 on Wednesday night.

An early Reiss Nelson goal separated the two sides as the Gunners returned to winning ways following Sunday’s disappointing North London Derby draw.

Mikel Arteta made wholesale changes to his starting XI as the likes of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka missed out through injury. There were rare starts for Emile Smith Rowe and Nelson in attack, while young Charles Sagoe Jr made his debut for the club.

It was far from a classic and Arsenal were eventually made to hold on after a bright opening period. Kai Havertz’s struggles continued, but Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu particularly impressed in defence. Aaron Ramsdale, on his return to the side, also made a couple of excellent saves to preserve the Gunners’ lead and ensure they were in the hat for the fourth round.

Speaking post-match, Arteta said he was pleased with his side’s performance: “Really happy. In this competition, you are in or out. Two very different halves. Second half we were too direct and it becomes a difficult game and you have to defend every time. When you don’t play that well you have to have some big defensive moments.”

Arsenal to face West Ham in Carabao Cup fourth round

The draw was made after Man City’s defeat at Newcastle, with Arsenal being paired against West Ham.

The Gunners are yet to face David Moyes’ Hammers this season, with their first Premier League meeting scheduled for Boxing Day.

It’s another tough tie for the Gunners, who initially missed out on facing Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Chelsea. West Ham have already highlighted their credentials this term, and this will be a tricky affair for what will likely be another rotated Arsenal XI.

Arsenal’s fourth-round tie in east London will be played in the week commencing 30 October.

Here’s the full Carabao Cup fourth-round draw:

  • Mansfield vs Port Vale
  • Ipswich Town vs Fulham
