Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night as they were soundly beaten 3-1 by West Ham.

A frustrating first half concluded with the Gunners behind after Ben White flicked Jarrod Bowen’s inswinging corner beyond Aaron Ramsdale early on in the contest. Had VAR been in play, Tomas Soucek’s blatant shirt-grabbing of Ramsdale might’ve given the visitors a reprieve.

The Hammers then burst into life after the restart with Ramsdale having to save brilliantly from Jarrod Bowen before Mohammed Kudus doubled their lead after cutting inside Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Things then went from bad to worse for Mikel Arteta’s side as Bowen crashed home a third for West Ham via a Jakub Kiwior deflection and Ramsdale’s palm.

Despite the tie looking like a lost cause, Arteta threw on the calvary in a bid to salvage the Gunners. However, there was no miracle as West Ham comfortably preserved their advantage to progress into the quarter-finals despite Martin Odegaard’s very late consolation.

Goalkeeper & Defenders

Aaron Ramsdale (GK) – 4/10 – Hard done by for West Ham’s first, there was little he could do for the second, but, despite the deflection, he should’ve done more to prevent Bowen from getting on the scoresheet.

Ben White (RB) – 3/10 – Not his best night. After opening the scoring for the hosts, White teed up West Ham’s third by heading into the path of Bowen.

Jakub Kiwior (CB) – 4.5/10 – Didn’t quite get the praise for his performance, especially in the first half. Thought he was rash at times, and he took safety first to a new level with his headers out for throw-ins.

Gabriel (CB) – 3.5/10 – His worst performance of the season by a distance. Caught out on three occasions in the opening exchanges, and he never quite recovered thereafter.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) – 5/10 – Caught out defensively for the second goal. The novelty has worn off in possession.
