David Ornstein has shed light on the position Arsenal are likely to target for their next major signing.

Ornstein believes the Gunners may seek to bolster their attacking options with the signing of a striker.

The potential interest in a striker stems partly from the injury woes of Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian forward picked up a knock in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the Champions League last month, where he was instrumental in the win, providing an assist to Gabriel Martinelli and scoring a stunning goal himself.

Jesus has had a history of injuries, including a long-term injury he sustained during the World Cup in Qatar last year, which sidelined him for over three months.

While Eddie Nketiah has stepped in to cover for Jesus during his absences, and Arsenal have the versatility of players like Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard to play as strikers, there’s growing speculation that Arsenal could delve into the transfer market to secure a quality alternative in the striking department.

David Ornstein, in a Q&A for The Athletic, expressed his belief that the Gunners’ next major signing is likely to be a striker. He emphasized that the decision will depend on various factors, including financial considerations, player availability, existing squad options, and injury situations.

“When they next make a significant recruit, I reckon that will be a striker. But it will depend on all the normal factors like money, availability, existing options, injuries, and more.”

Ornstein also revealed that the Gunners made no concrete plans to sign a striker during the previous summer transfer window. Arsenal’s preferred approach had been to focus on the next summer window.

“There was no plan to sign a striker last summer and I suspect in an ideal world for Arsenal that would have been the stance for January, too, with the focus being on next summer.

“Let’s see if that changes, but I don’t know of it doing so yet,” he wrote.

As of now, there hasn’t been any substantial progress in Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker. The situation is expected to unfold over the next couple of months, and the club’s stance may evolve depending on various variables.
